Garlic Aioli Steak Sandwich

A note from Zhi

Personal Story: My partner and I love cooking together, and lately we've been deep in a sandwich phase. I love cooking steak, she’s all about bread, so this combo brings our favorites together. 😄

Ingredients

  • 1 Ribeye Steak (at room temp):
  • - Salt
  • - Pepper
  • - Cooking Oil
  • - 2-3 Garlic Cloves
  • - 3-4 Tablespoon Butter
  • - Rosemary
  • - Thyme
  • Caramelized Onions:
  • - 2 Yellow Onion
  • - Cooking Oil
  • - Pinch of Salt
  • Garlic Aioli:
  • - 5 Garlic Cloves
  • - Squeeze of Lemon Juice
  • - ½ teaspoon Dijon Mustard
  • - ¾ cup Kewpie Mayo
  • - Salt
  • Ciabatta Bread
  • Leafy Greens / Arugula

Method

  1. 01

    Instructions:

  2. 02

1.) Caramelize onions: Slice onions while you heat oil in pan. Add in onions and sauté for 5 minutes over medium heat. Add pinch of salt, reduce heat to medium low and cook until onions turn a golden brown (~60 minutes), stir occasionally.

  3. 03

2.) Garlic Aioli: Heat oil to a simmer in small pot and roast garlic cloves until softened and golden brown. Mash garlic and let cool. Move to a small bowl, mix in mayo, dijon mustard, lemon juice, and salt to taste.

  4. 04

3.) Steak: Season steak with salt and pepper on both sides. Heat pan with oil. Add steak to searing hot pan. Sear steak a few minutes on both sides. Add crushed garlic cloves and render fat. Add thyme and rosemary, roast for a few seconds and add butter. Tilt pan and baste steaks with the butter. Cook to desired liking. Remove from heat and let rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing.

  5. 05

4.) Assemble: Slice and toast ciabatta bread. Assemble sandwich with garlic aioli, leafy greens, steak, and caramelized onions.

  6. 06

    5.) Enjoy!
